Spotted Pig: Oysters, Carrots, and... I forgot to get an entree

Last night I went on my second visit to the Spotted Pig, located at Greenwich St. and West 11th in the WVillage. The Pig doesn’t take reservations, as its prerecorded message will inform you (there is a loophole: they take private parties). Anyway, you can’t even call ahead to put your name on the list, though the host will happily tell you that it’s “about and hour” until they can seat you. I would normally balk at the prospect of waiting 20 minutes, and an entire hour would normally be out of the question, but the burger I had at brunch this weekend was so good I really wanted to see what they could do with dinner.

So, we put our name down, then walked back to my place for a few glasses of wine. 45 minutes later, I called to check the status (15-20 minutes), and we walked back to find our table ready for us. Nice.

1 Dozen oysters. Perfect size; fresh; sweet (We discussed the merits of large vs. small and sweet vs. briny oysters; I am a fan of small and sweet)

Radish and parmesan salad - refreshing with a salt & peppery bite without actually using salt or pepper

Roasted carrots with avocado and cumin - this was amazing; the carrots were just the right balance of sweet and savory, cooked perfectly, and the avocado added some richness

Wine by the glass is kind of limited, but that was my only complaint, and I didn’t even want wine.
